IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam challenging as biggest globally in 2021 with new sponsor VNG

This May 6th to 9th, some of the best and most inspiring athletes in Vietnam will arrive in Danang to compete in the 6th edition of VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Viet Nam.

Not only will the race celebrate its 6th anniversary with another record domestic turnout, it will also be a welcoming back of the title sponsor, VNG.

The VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam was historically launched the first time in 2015 with VNG, so it is a “come full circle” celebration for all in Vietnam’s triathlon community.

With this comeback, VNG and Sunrise Events Vietnam (SEV) are determined to fulfill the
aspirations of debuting the 140.6 distance in Vietnam in the coming years, given the fact that the Vietnam triathlon community is growing actively and steadily.

Over the years, VNG has created both virtual platforms and physical spaces for their employees, partners and non-professional teams to practice.

As such VNG has actively sought to develop the triathlon community in Vietnam along the same lines upon which this technology company inspired and created the health growth movement to begin with.

Due to the extraordinary growth since the inaugural VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam race in 2015, the country is now firmly on the global map for triathlon events and has reinforced Danang as a major sports tourism destination, attracting international athletes alongside a growing community of local athletes from around the country.

Although international travel restrictions are currently in place in Vietnam due to COVID-19 protocols, race weekend will still take place as scheduled, with the opening ceremony on Thursday May 6 and the main event starting Sunday May 9.

Each year, during the main race, individuals and relay teams test themselves in this incredible endurance event consisting of a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run.

This year’s race will be a testament to the strength and perseverance of all domestic athletes.

The motto for the weekend is EMBRACING CHALLENGES, which refers to the amazing athlete participants and the strong leadership of the Vietnamese Government in coping with such unique and challenging times.

The message also refers to one of the enduring benefits of becoming a triathlete and IRONMAN competitor, this being that both mental and physical health are the most important things, above anything else.

This year’s event will have 50 qualifying slots to the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship to be held in St.George, Utah, USA, on Sep. 17-18.

Importantly at this event, the IRONMAN Foundation, through the Women for Tri Program, has awarded this race an additional 25 qualifying slots to both welcome and empower new female triathletes.

Subsequently, at a combined 75, this is the most ever world championship slots awarded to the VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam.

The VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam weekend has a number of separate events to the main race, including the Sunrise SPRINT Vietnam, a mini-triathlon for those wishing to test their skills before taking on a 70.3 distance, and for the younger triathlon generation, IRONKIDS Vietnam, a race for youths between 5-14 years old who can feel the excitement of sport all within a safe, friendly, and encouraging environment.
