4RAU Barber Shop

4RAU Barber Shop

Another barber shop in Ho Chi Minh City inspired by 1920s and 1930s American culture is 4RAU just a short ride from Pham Ngu Lao Street — Ho Chi Minh City’s rowdy backpacker district.

Don’t let that it’s in District 10 turn you off, it’s right on the border of District 3 and is in an easy to find location. 4RAU — rau means beard in Vietnamese — is extremely popular with the young hipsters of Saigon — none of whom, somewhat ironically, can actually grow a beard.

On Sundays, expect to see the back wall lined with clients patiently waiting their turn in the barber’s chair. These photos were taken on Christmas Eve, so the lads were keen for a trim to impress their lady on what is traditionally date night in Vietnam.

There are at least eight barbers working at any given time daily from 10am to 8pm offering a cut and style for just VND60,000 — no wonder they do on average 200 cuts per day.

The staff here are ultra-friendly and look as though they take great pride in the sculptures they create. The atmosphere and decor finds a happy medium somewhere between Brothers and Liem barber shops and is definitely another place worth checking out.

4RAU is at 634 Dien Bien Phu, District 10, HCMC and is open daily from 10am to 8pm. For more info, click here
